Frequently asked questions...

1) What do I have to wear?

For your first visit it would be best to wear some lose comfortable clothing. This will make it easier for any assessment and mobilization that may be necessary prior to, or during, your massage treatment.  For the massage itself: Traditionally, Swedish Massage is performed over the bare skin with the use of oils, and tends to be most effective this way.  However, it is also going to be most effective if you are able to relax. With that in mind, please feel free to leave on or take off as much clothing as you feel comfortable with. Regardless, you will always be under a sheet and only the area(s) to be treated will be uncovered.  Gowns are also provided should you wish to wear one.

2) Will the massage hurt?

Briefly- no. However, it is fair to expect any injured area to feel tender. In some circumstances pain may be expected. If this is the case your therapist will explain this to you. Regardless, you are always  in control of how much pressure your therapist uses and are encouraged to give as much feedback as possible to make your treatment comfortable for you.

3) How long will my massage last?

We offer a variety of treatment times to accommodate the needs and schedules of each person.   30 minutes is often enough to treat one or two areas (ie: neck and upper back, or lower back and upper back, etc).   45 minutes tends to be the average treatment time and is often adequate to treat two or three areas.  60 minutes is generally recommended  for a general relaxation  massage.  If you are very tight or have lots of muscle you may want to consider a 90 minute treatment.

4) What should I expect for my first appointment?

Please count on being with us for about 15 minutes more than your scheduled appointment time. Please try to arrive at least 5 minutes early so that you may fill out a Case History Form. After you have finished filling out the form we will ask you specific questions about your condition and perform any necessary  assessment to determine the best course of treatment. Your treatment will be performed during the remaining time. Afterwards you may be given specific instructions regarding stretches, exercises, or changes in your routine to help facilitate your recovery.

5)  Is my massage covered by my extended health plan?

Most Extended Health Plans cover the services of a Registered Massage Therapist. Although coverage varies from plan to plan, the average amount seems to be about 80%.  Please call your provider to confirm if your specific plan permits third party billing, assignment of payment to a third party, if you have a deductible and/or co-pay, your yearly coverage amount, and if a doctor's referral is necessary.

 6) Does MSP cover massage?

MSP currently supplements massage therapy by $23.00 for those people who qualify (ie: if your income is under $25,000/year you are entitled to supplementation of 10 visits of any combination of massage therapy, physiotherpy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and naturopathy) in any calendar year. The remainder of the private fees are not covered by MSP and will vary depending on the length of time scheduled.

7) How long will it take for me to get better?

This varies from person to person and has a lot to due with age, the severity of the injury, general health before the injury, the length of time the injury has been present before seeking treatment, compliance with home care instructions, and the ability to avoid aggravating factors.

8) How often should I get a massage treatment?

For injury recovery, we recommend twice (sometimes- and rarely- three times a week). Regular treatment is recommended until you are 100% better. You are always free to cease treatment as soon as you are as better as you like. Regardless of when treatment ends, regular stretching and exercise will always be recommended.

If the goal is more towards stress reduction you are welcome to see us as often as you deem necessary.

9) Can I come in for a massage if there's nothing really wrong?

Absolutely! Feel free to treat yourself to a relaxing massage anytime you like!

(The sooner you call for an appointment the more times you have to choose from)

Hope to hear from you soon!
